What you’ll practice

  • Handling "what would you do if a customer was angry?"
  • Showing you can work in a team without saying "I'm a team player"
  • Answering questions about availability honestly
  • Explaining why this shop rather than any shop

5-minute retail drill

  1. Answer: "A customer says an item scanned at the wrong price and they're annoyed. What do you do?"
  2. Say the steps in order. Don't jump to "get the manager" first.
  3. Check whether you acknowledged the customer before solving the problem.
  4. Re-record with that in.
  5. Under 60 seconds.

Example scripts

Good
I'd stay calm and try to help them. If I couldn't sort it I'd get a manager.
Better
I'd apologise first, then check the shelf price myself so they can see I'm taking it seriously. If the shelf label is wrong I'd honour it if I'm allowed, and if I'm not sure I'd ask a supervisor rather than guess.
Best
First I'd say sorry, because whether or not we're wrong, they've been held up. Then I'd go and check the shelf label myself rather than tell them to wait. If we've mislabelled it, I'd honour the lower price if that's the policy. If I wasn't sure of the policy I'd ask rather than promise something I can't do — I'd rather check for thirty seconds than tell them the wrong thing twice.

Common mistakes

  • Going straight to "I'd get the manager" — it reads as avoidance
  • Never apologising, just problem-solving
  • Saying you're available anytime when you aren't
  • Answering "why here" with something true of every supermarket

How Konfidence helps

  • Checks whether your answer had a clear order of steps
  • Flags when you skipped acknowledging the customer
  • Lets you rehearse the awkward scenarios before someone asks them for real

FAQ

What's the most common retail interview question?
Some version of "tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult person." It doesn't have to be a customer — school or sport works fine.
Should I say I'm available all the time?
No. Be honest about school and exams. Managers plan rotas; someone who over-promises and then cancels is worse than someone who was clear.
Do I need retail experience?
For most entry-level roles, no. They're hiring for reliability and manner.
